Pleasures Of Learning

Allah has endowed humans with a variety of endowments, including sight, hearing, speech, and intellect. Although we should be grateful to Allah for these gifts and express our gratitude to Him, this is not nearly enough. Allah has bestowed these gifts upon us so that we may use them to our own advantage for sustaining our own livelihoods and to further our own education.

Islam promotes education since reading is the foundation of all sciences and the first revelation was “Iqraa,” which is Arabic for “Read.” In Islam, learning comes before doing; you cannot pray without learning how to pray, and you cannot fast or worship Allah without learning how to worship Allah. This is because one of Allah’s divine names is Al Aleem (the omniscient), hence learning comes before doing in Islam.

People need to eat and drink once or twice a day, but Imam Ahmed ibn Hanbal remarked that people need to learn constantly.
The hadeeth also states that scholars are the inheritors of scholars and that prophets do not leave behind riches or silver but inherit knowledge (Ilm).

The high status of scholars is emphasized in various verses of the Quran. Allah said:

Allah ˹Himself˺ is a Witness that there is no god ˹worthy of worship˺ except Him—and so are the angels and people of knowledge. He is the Maintainer of justice. There is no god ˹worthy of worship˺ except Him—the Almighty, All-Wise.

Of all of Allah’s servants, only the knowledgeable ˹of His might˺ are ˹truly˺ in awe of Him. Allah is indeed Almighty, All-Forgiving.

Allah will elevate those of you who are faithful, and ˹raise˺ those gifted with knowledge in rank. And Allah is All-Aware of what you do.

Say, ˹O Prophet,˺ “Are those who know equal to those who do not know?” None will be
mindful ˹of this˺ except people of reason.

According to the hadeeth, whomever seeks knowledge will find that Allah would make his journey to Jannah even simpler.

There are two major categories of knowledge:

1- Mundane knowledge as science, mathematics, arts, technology… all types of learning that are essential to human living.

2- Religious knowledge as fiqh, hadeeth, Quran learning, Islamic history, creed ….
Islam requires all Muslims to pursue knowledge because, without it, we would not have learned the path to Allan or the path to our Jannah. As a result, acquiring knowledge is a requirement for all Muslims. Even in the realms of science, technology, and other subjects, the Ummah is in dire need of scholars. An informed and well-known community could not be misled by adversaries.

In order to secure their release, Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered the Muslim prisoners of war (detainees) who were taken prisoner to teach Muslim illiterates reading and writing.

Whoever hides knowledge will be restrained by the bridle of fire on the judgement day, according to the hadeeth and the warnings of Allah in the Quran for those who do so after He has made it obvious for everyone. The knowledge that benefits everyone is one of the three continually rewarding deeds a Muslim can leave behind when he dies.

The majority of the time in the Qur’an, Allah compares people who have faith to those who have done good acts ; both of these two requirements call for knowledge.
