The Muslim can choose from a variety of life projects, such as learning how to raise a moral son who would continue to do good deeds after his death. He can also follow the educational road by possessing the resources needed to instruct others in their religion.

Obtaining an Ijazah certificate is one of the steps a Muslim can take to assist others in learning the Book of Allah the Almighty.

What Is Ijazah?

“Ijazah” or “Ijaza” (in Arabic: الإِجازَة) (plural: Ijazahs or Ijazat) linguistically means “permission”, “authorization”, or “license”.
It’s a license authorizing its holder to transmit a certain Islamic or Quranic knowledge, which is issued by someone who already has this authority or license.

Obtaining Ijazah means that the student has acquired this Quranic or Islamic knowledge from the issuer of the Ijaza through first-hand oral instruction, although this requirement came to be relaxed over time.

The Idea of Ijazah is providing a chain of authorized transmitters going back to the original author often accompanied texts of hadith, Fiqh, and tafsir. Accordingly, the Ijazah certificate could be in the Quran, Hadith, Fiqh, or Tafsir.

Quran Ijazah Meaning

Quran Ijazah is an accredited Quran certificate issued by a Sheikh already holding the same type of Ijazah. It states that its holder has mastered Quran recitation with Tajweed or Quran Memorization/Hifz according to the type of Ijaza.

Obtaining Quran Ijaza means that its holder now has the authority to transmit/teach the corresponding Quranic knowledge as well as award/issue the same authority to others according to certain terms & conditions.

Types of Ijazah

There are 2 main types Quran Ijazah:

1- Ijazah in Quran Recitation with Tajweed
2- Ijazah in Quran Memorization/Hifz

Ijazah in Quran Recitation (Reading)

Students who can flawlessly recite the entire Quran with Tajweed in front of a Sheikh or Quran Teacher who has received Ijazah certification are eligible for this sort of Ijazah.

Quran Recitation Ijazah, then, is a credential that allows its holder to instruct Quran recitation (reading), and it may be granted by an Imam or scholar who has already received this credential (endless chain).

Ijazah in Quran Recitation with Tajweed is divided into 4 subtypes of Ijaza:

  1. Quran Ijazah with one narration, such as the Ijaza with the narration of Hafs ‘an ‘Asim.
  2. Ijaza with seven Qira’at of ash-Shatibiyyah.
  3. Quran Ijazah with 3 Qira’at of Durrat Al-Maa’nia.
  4. Ijazah with 10 Qira’at of Tayyibat An-Nashr.

Ijazah in Quran Memorization/Hifz

This kind of Ijazah is given to Quran students who have perfect memorization of the Quran and who can recite the entire Quran from memory—without consulting the holy Quran—without making a mistake in front of a Sheikh or Quran teacher who has received Ijazah certification.

In other words, Quran Memorization Ijazah is a credential that can be granted by an Imam or scholar who has already received certification and entitles the holder to teach Quran Memorization (Hifz). The student receives this certificate after thoroughly memorising the entire Quran and reciting it aloud in the presence of a certified tutor.

The History of Ijazah/Sanad in Islam

Prophet (PBUH) Delivery of Quran

In light of the definition provided above, it is evident that Allah, the Almighty, Jibril, and the Prophet form the beginning of this honourable chain (pbuh). The Quran actually makes reference to this:

“Indeed, upon Us is its collection [in your heart] and [to make possible] its recitation. So when We have recited it [through Gabriel], then follow its recitation. Then upon Us is its clarification [to you],” [Quran, 75: 17, 18 & 19].

Companions Delivery of Quran

The Prophet (pbuh) then read the Quran to his companions, providing some of them oral Ijazah-like instruction even though the name hadn’t yet been coined.

Take the following Hadith as an illustration of a group of those companions:

Take the Qur’an from Ibn Mas’ud, Ubayy Bin Ka’b, Mu’adh Bin Jabal, and Salim, the slave that Abu Hudhaifah had released. [At-Tirmidhi].

Following that, those companions dispersed throughout the Muslim world to impart the Quranic teachings and to grant permission to those who had acquired the art of memorizing and reciting it to continue along this line.

Era of Systematic Delivery for Ijazah

After years of this, the matter turned to be more systematic. Thus, you can see 10 modes of recitation with different Tajweed rules. All of them are delivered from Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), and there is neither extra preference for one over the others, nor contradictions between them. Each one is spread in some areas more than the others, according to the scholars carrying it.

As follows:

 1. Naafi’ Al-Madanee. (Madinah)
Imam Malik recited in this manner.
Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal often recited in this manner.

2. Ibn Katheer al-Makee. (Makkah)
Imam Shafi’i recited in this manner.
3. Asim al-Kufi (Koofah)
Imaam Abu Hanifa recited in this manner. Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal often recited in this manner.
4. Abu Amr al-Basri (Basra)
5. Ibn Aamir ash-Shami (Syria)
6. Hamzah Al-Kufi (Koofah)
7. Al-Kisaa’ee
8. Abu Ja’far Al-Madanee (Madinah)
9. Yaqub ibn Al-Basri (Basra)
Imam Bukhari recited in this manner.
10. Khalaf

Scholars’ journey to seek knowledge

Muslims used to place a high emphasis on knowledge, particularly when it came to the Quran and Hadith. They are aware that Allah makes the path to Jannah simple for the one who travels it in pursuit of knowledge. They left their home nations to visit the scholars in order to get knowledge from them.
